Why sunscreen is the whole argument

If you only change one thing about your routine this year, this is the change with the most evidence behind it.

There is no shortage of debate in skincare. Sunscreen is one of the few places where the argument is largely settled.

What sun exposure actually does

Ultraviolet light contributes to uneven pigmentation, the visible signs of premature ageing, and — most seriously — skin cancer risk. Daily, unremarkable exposure adds up: the walk to the car, the drive to work, the afternoon spent near a window.

Why it matters more if you are treating dark spots

Pigmentation is, in part, a response to light. Treating existing marks while continuing to accumulate new sun exposure is like bailing out a boat without patching the hole. This is the single most common reason people conclude that a brightening product "did not work".

The practical part

  • Use enough. Around two fingers' length for face and neck. Most people apply a third of what the label assumes.
  • Apply it last in your morning routine, after moisturiser.
  • Reapply every two hours if you are outdoors for long stretches.
  • Wear it in winter and on overcast days. UVA passes through cloud.

Choosing one you will wear

The best sunscreen is the one you reach for without thinking. If the texture is unpleasant or it stings, you will skip it — and a perfect formula you skip protects you exactly as much as no formula at all.
